The Quantumnly Over-Simplified, Quasi-Scienterrific Explanation of Non-Locality
Well it started out with a Danish guy named Niels Bohr. Bohr fired two photons in the opposite direction, applied a magnetic field to one to change it's direction and, voila, the other one changed direction. (Last I heard, this experiment is successful even when the two photons are as far apart as 144 km.) Clearly there was a connection between the two photons, but what? Nothing in physics could explain the connection. Speculation was that it had something to do with the forces of gravity, more or less because that was likewise unexplained.
However, Bohr's assistant, Werner Heisenberg had come up with the Uncertainty Theory, which said that because we (humans) are unable to see (measure) both the position and momentum (velocity) of a sub atomic particle we are really not certain if we are looking at the same particle at any given space or in any given time. Wellll.....suddenly the theory that all parts of the universe are connected by some strange force to all other parts of the universe no longer seemed any more far fetched than saying any two parts (photons) are connected. The only reason reason we see two photons traveling in opposite directions is that the influence of our observation makes it so...to our reality. In other words because we so expect things to move like trains in certain directions and have created our models of observation only to allow for that, we can only see two photons moving in opposite direction and not that whatever force connects those two points always connects those two points. For expert testimony for this, I have called upon Schrodinger's Cat. Wait.. I've just been informed the cat is dead...in this reality, we'll have to adjourn and reconvene in another reality. In the mean time, here is a bonifide quote from Hiesenberg: ";We can no longer speak of the behavior of the particle independently of the process of observation. As a final consequence, the natural laws formulated mathematically in quantum theory no longer deal with the elementary particles themselves but with our knowledge of them. Nor is it any longer possible to ask whether or not these particles exist in space and time objectively ... " (http://www.physics.nyu.edu/faculty/sokal/transgress_v2/node1.html) In short our observation of an event can influence that event. Now....if the physical aspects of the universe can be described as connected, or ";non-local"; why not the psychological aspects -- at least in some form of consciousness. Those pesky Eastern Philosophy types have been saying this for several millennium. Fortunately for us, they spiritual bent will not allow them to be smug should this prove correct |

Entanglement vs Transmission
I am wondering if it might be helpful to think of a model of psi that is less similar to radio or television sending and receiving and think about the process of PK or ESP as a form of entanglement. This is Dr. Radin's (http://www.deanradin.com/NewWeb/EMindex.html) bailiwick (http://deanradin.blogspot.com/)
If you think of minds (especially those which are more intimate) being entangled, rather than sending signals such as radio waves or thought waves, then it's easier to understand this instant revelation of crisis and death. Expand that entanglement to include the physical universe and you no longer have to determine which of the parties initiated the physical manifestation of PK since in effect it is all part of a single entity
If you look at quantum mechanics which says that time and space is the same thing. Knowing something that is happening at a time our conscious decides is "not now" (future or past) would be possible if our conscious chose some other (parapsychological) way of observing that event. Perhaps that is what our conscious is doing. Perhaps all moments of all things are known to our unconscious and somewhere between the conscious and the unconscious, something (subconscious) makes decisions as to what we will observe in whatever construct of time we choose (which is linear). Sort of a theory of "agreed consciousness";. The Maharishi Effect (http://www.vedicknowledge.com/Maharishi_effect.html) postulates that if there was a cohesion in thought (the collective conscious) peace could be manifested in the world. (Ripple effect). I wonder if everyone were to cohesively believe in psi, if it wouldn't become normal instead of paranormal
Serendipitous Non-Locality
If I may be so bold to offer up "lay person's" horribly reductionistic version of entanglement, it works like this. Fire two photons in the opposite direction. If you use a magnetic field to change the "direction" of one photon, the other photon changes "direction" also. So far this works even when the photos are 144 km apart. This demonstrates that the two are somehow, interconnected, or “entangled" In the book "Holographic Universe" the pages from about 33 to 45 explain this in easy to understand terms. In fact the term "Holographic Universe" is another term for a non-local universe. If you break a hologram into 5 pieces, instead of getting 5 parts of a picture, you get 5 whole pictures indicating that all parts contain all parts. One theory of non-locality.
When you look at the interconnectedness of two photons and add in the fact that we can only see how fast a photon is moving or where it is (Heisenberg's Uncertainty Theory) then how do we know it is two photons moving apart, or if the whole universe is filled with photons(a matrix) and we are seeing two photons which have always been where they are when we observe them. We only think they are moving because our paradigm tells us. Hence you have observation effecting reality: Observation Theories (in a horribly over simplified description)
Without going into too much depth, Walach in his interview with Watt, talked about a compatability between proper quantum and his theory of general quantum mechanics as a way of using the form of quantum mechanics and explain the effects at the human level. In this we can see a duality existing in the human consciousness and unconsciousness that allows for individuality and connectedness, as well as cognitive vs unconscious processes.
In “Extrasensory Perception and Quantum Models of Cognition,” Tressoldi, Storm & Radin (2010) indicate that many cognitive experiences and possibly psi experiences are better explained by quantum formalisms such as interference, cunjuction fallacy, guppy effect and “an advanced model of Jungian theory that included quantum entanglement: They say, “If quantum-like models are valid ways of understanding certain forms of perception and cognition and nonlocal entanglement-like connections are unherently contained within such models, then it seems reasonalbe to expect some aspects of those isolated systems we call “individual” to be more connected than they appear to be.” Sort of a restatment of Walach's General Quantum Theory applied to the paranormal
